On September 24, 2025, professor and author Raúl Rodríguez Ferrándiz, Chair of Semiotics of Mass Communication at the University of Alicante, participated in the VII Global Forum Latin America and the Caribbean, held at Lerner Hall, Columbia University, in New York.

Rodríguez Ferrándiz spoke at Panel 7, entitled “Democracy and Elections in the Age of Artificial Intelligence”, where he shared his expertise on fake news and disinformation. The Forum, organized by the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (FUNGLODE), brought together academics, policymakers and civil society representatives from Latin America and the Caribbean, aiming to debate the region’s role in a global context marked by geopolitical tensions and economic challenges.

During his presentation, the professor discussed the mechanisms of persuasion, rumor, lies, and post-truth, drawing on his book Desinformación y poder: alquimias de la persuasión (2024), co-edited by the universities of València, Autónoma de Barcelona, Pompeu Fabra, and Jaume I (UJI) in the Aldea Global collection, and awarded the València Essay Prize by the Institució Alfons el Magnànim. The work examines contemporary media cases and reflects on the viral impact of social networks.

At the same time, Rodríguez Ferrándiz is engaged in two research projects funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation and the European Union: one on early detection of disinformation and digital toxicity (2022-2025), and another on testimonial narratives in the digital and AI era (2025-2028).

Finally, his book Desinformación y poder: alquimias de la persuasión was also presented on October 1 at the University of Alicante’s City of Alicante campus.
